The Fire

The Fire

The O'Leary barn burst into flames on Sunday evening, October 8, 1871. In this drawing artist Marshall Philyaw illustrates how the first few minutes of the fire might have appeared to someone watching from the opposite side of DeKoven Street. Philyaw depicts many of the people and events mentioned in the inquiry transcript: Mr. McLaughlin and his fiddle, neighbors using buckets to extinguish the fire, firemen ripping up the sidewalks so that they can be used as fuel for the steam engines, and of course, Daniel "Peg Leg" Sullivan and Dennis Regan.
